The Master Recording License is Live — Now Featuring Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment!

Chicago, Illinois, December 11, 2025 — School Music License is proud to announce the launch of the Master Recording License. This groundbreaking license gives K-12 schools permission to use millions of commercially recorded tracks in their streamed video content and now features the catalogs of Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment—the two largest record labels in the world.

The new license expands the Annual Basic License, which provides permissions for K-12 schools looking to stream live performances of events and concerts. By adding the Master Recording License, these streams can also include commercial recordings, perfect for athletic events and beyond. With this licensing bundle, schools will no longer need to seek permissions from individual record labels or publishing houses, saving time, money, and administrative frustration.

“Walk-up songs at the baseball game? Music for gymnastics, dance recitals, pom routines, talent shows, or pep rallies? Having access to millions of songs is a true game changer for what is possible with music and the K-12 school community,” shared Alec Harris, President of School Music License.

“This new license provides incredible options for performing arts departments, athletic departments, and truly all the students in a school building,” he added. “These affordable licenses offer, for the first time, the ability to showcase online every event where live and recorded music is incorporated. The music community has come together to solve what has been a real problem for students and schools.”

“School arts and athletic programs continue to soar, and now schools have the opportunity to fully showcase to parents, grandparents, the community…and even recruit future students into their programs,” Harris continued. “This has been the culmination of a multi-year effort that many in the music community thought was impossible.”

Featuring permissions for over 10 million titles from more than 10,000 Member Publishers, School Music License is the national leader in music licensing for K-12 schools in the United States. From band,

choir, and orchestra concerts, to halftime shows, pep rallies, and athletic events, School Music License allows schools to stream online all of their unique events that utilize copyrighted music without takedown notices or muted audio.

“Serving as a bridge between schools and the Member Publishers, Labels, and Organizations that we represent enables school arts and athletics programs to more easily secure the permissions they need,” shared Brenna C. Horn-Cronin, Executive General Manager of School Music License.

“Our mission is to help your school shine online while supporting ethical music copyright practices,” she added. “And now with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment on board, our growing catalog of permissions includes works by your favorite artists, like AC/DC, Arcade Fire, Beyoncé, Billy Joel, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, Destiny’s Child, Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons, Kacey Musgraves, Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Metallica, Miley Cyrus, Noah Kahan, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, One Direction, Ozzy Osbourne, Post Malone, Rihanna, The Chainsmokers, Train, Travis Scott, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, Vampire Weekend, and many more.”
